ABOUT THE PROGRAM
As the Union Representative, what do I need to do to be an effective leader?
This 2 Day course is designed for newly elected SSTUWA Union Representatives and Union Branch Officers. The training will provide fundamental knowledge and skills that enable effective and respected union leadership in the workplace.
Training Modules to be covered:
- The role and responsibilities of Union Representatives.
- Navigating and implementing the agreement and award: i.e. General Agreement, Teachers’ Award and School Education Act.
- Communication: Represent, Advocate, Manage and Lead.
- Organisation: skills and strategies: Better manage union members and union business.
- Conflict Resolution: Advise and manage union matters. Effectively manage disputes.
- Negotiating at the workplace: Skills and strategies to advocate and represent.
- Dispute Management: Organise collective and individual dispute resolution.

Audience
This course is intended to suit the needs of:
- Elected SSTUWA Union Representatives
- Branch Officers
- SSTUWA Women’s Contact Officers
Under our Award all members (schools & TAFE) are eligible to 5 paid “trade union training” leave days per year To comply with TUT leave requirements applicants must:
- Submit applications to DOE/Principal 4 weeks prior to the event.
- Provide DOE/Principal the course details: To do this, provide a copy of the course program as attached.
- Be nominated by the Union (Refer to the target audience and/or who is invited)
This TUT Leave provision covers teacher relief for SSTUWA TUT courses. To assist school administration with TUT Leave applications the following process information is provided-
- When completing an ‘Application for Leave’ form, indicate that the leave is ‘Miscellaneous Paid Leave’.
- “Trade Union Training – project code 1471”, should be written under ‘Leave Type’.

Non Members: N/A - Members Only
Refreshments: Morning Tea and Lunch will be provided

Travel and accommodation funding is available for Country Reps and Deputy Reps on application.
