SSTUWA At 2010 Pride Fairday

sstuwa-pride-fariday-2010Saturday 9th October saw sunny skies, large crowds and a friendly atmosphere at the annual Pride Fairday, held in Russell Square, Northbridge.

Breaking with tradition, Fairday was held later than usual, a fortnight after the traditional time of the Queen's Birthday long weekend.

The SSTUWA had its presence once again at Fairday through the work of the B-LeGITS committee, which spread the word of the Union's work representing LGBTI staff in state schools.

As well as promoting the work of the Union, the stall had information for teachers, students, parents and community members.

The stall also had information about Daniel Witthaus' excellent publications “Pride and Prejudice” and “Beyond 'That's so gay'”.

Responses from the community ranged from “I didn't know the Union represented LGBTI staff,” to “Good on you for standing up for LGBTI staff and students”.

It was pleasing to note one state high school's response to students coming out, although there were more tales of woe about the treatment of LGBTI staff and students rather than positive ones.

The Union's presence was well received, with lots of information and stories shared, pamphlets and membership forms dispensed and student teachers encouraged to join the Union.

This was the third year that the SSTUWA had a stall at the fair in its own right – previously we were represented as part of UnionsWA or community stalls.

Since standing on our own feet, we have been commended for our work and certainly have increased our profile in the community.

Once again, we were the only union present sharing information with the LGBTI community.

Thanks to Ross for assisting with the stall on Fairday, and also to Bronwyn and Union staff for preparing materials and resources for what was a successful day.

No WorkChoices WA

Troy Buswell and the State Government have appointed a former Howard Government industrial relations advocate to review Western Australian workplace laws and will soon announce changes that could affect up to 300,000 Western Australian workers' jobs and livelihoods.

For Our Future

Public schools are a foundation stone of our society. They are places of learning, of inspiration and opportunity where every Australian child can get the education they deserve.  It's the key to a strong economy, a skilled workforce and a socially cohesive society.

Save Our Schools

Public education should be free and open to all to ensure non-selective and non-discriminatory access to a high quality education. Every child has a right to be educated; to develop as a human being. This basic capability should not be denied to anyone, either by design, apathy or neglect.
