Half Cohort Update 002: July 2009

four-our-future-imageThe UnSSTUWA intends to begin a media campaign to alert the community of the Half Year Cohort issue. Union reps and members are requested to direct letters to the editor, contact talkback radio and lobby their local politicians on this issue. As well as activities taking place by organisers and union staff, members can help greatly by becoming invloved in this way.

We are building a portal on this site to collect information and encourage members to join the online group and discussions on the member message forum as well as contact the office with information as requested in the following communication.

Adverts in Print Media :

During the July break the Union will be preparing the next stage of our media campaign on the “half cohort” issue.  To assist with one aspect , we are seeking information on expected teacher FTE loss in each high school for 2010. Union Reps are requested to complete and return the attached document (below) . Please check with your administrator to ensure figures are accurate at this stage.

Talkback Radio / Letters to Editor

In week 2 of the July break we are requesting that members take the time to raise the issue of the “half cohort” by contacting talkback radio and writing letters to editors of various newspaper outlets. [West, Sunday Times, local papers & on-line]

LOBBYING POLITICIANS

Planning is occurring to set in place a coordinated approach to lobbying in marginal seat electorates.  In week 2 of the July break, support materials on the website in the Portal for “HALF COHORT” will be available to assist you send an email communication to your local politician on this matter.

Public education should be free and open to all to ensure non-selective and non-discriminatory access to a high quality education. Every child has a right to be educated; to develop as a human being. This basic capability should not be denied to anyone, either by design, apathy or neglect.
