Half Cohort Update 009:

sstuwa-hyc-rally-001HALF COHORT RALLY – Friday 27 November 2009

Many thanks to the many members who joined the ‘HALF COHORT RALLY’ on Friday 27 November 4.30 – 5.30pm in St Georges Tce. Members listened to a number of speakers, petitions were signed and handed in to Minister Constable’s office and for about 30 minutes chanting boomed along St Georges Tce as we lined up with banners to draw to the attention of the community this issue.

President Anne Gisborne outlined the Union’s position on this issue. Roger Cook, Deputy Leader ALP, addressed the crowd and committed ongoing support from the ALP in demanding retention of the 2009 staffing levels. Fixed term teacher members Tracey Priest and Ashley Bennett provided some insight into personal circumstances and frustrations. As well they put clear and cogent arguments up about curriculum provision, special programs and staff turnover in difficult school for retaining the 2009 staffing levels.

This matter has not been resolved to the Union’s satisfaction. Again, all members are requested to step up and contact their local MP on this issue. Use the supports in the ‘ HALF COHORT CAMPAIGN ’ area on the union’s website.

HALF COHORT & WACSSO

I met with the WACSSO State Executive on Sunday morning. I was advised that WACSSO have been active on this issue and will continue to use their forces, particularly in the political domain to support the Union’s position on this matter.

HALF COHORT PETITION – Friday 11 December 2009

The Union intends to continue to gather signatures to the ‘HALF COHORT PETITION’. Please circulate this petition to members, non-members, other staff and parents.

No WorkChoices WA

Troy Buswell and the State Government have appointed a former Howard Government industrial relations advocate to review Western Australian workplace laws and will soon announce changes that could affect up to 300,000 Western Australian workers' jobs and livelihoods.

For Our Future

Public schools are a foundation stone of our society. They are places of learning, of inspiration and opportunity where every Australian child can get the education they deserve.  It's the key to a strong economy, a skilled workforce and a socially cohesive society.

Save Our Schools

Public education should be free and open to all to ensure non-selective and non-discriminatory access to a high quality education. Every child has a right to be educated; to develop as a human being. This basic capability should not be denied to anyone, either by design, apathy or neglect.
