On the last Friday in October women across the globe take to the streets to 'Reclaim the Night'. Reclaim the Night represents a claim for women's basic human right to live in freedom from the fear of violence. We protest for women to have the right to walk freely at night, free from the threat of rape and sexual violence. The ROAR Feminist Collective, based in Perth, Western Australia have organised a march and rally in the Perth CBD so that women and children can come together in a night of solidarity.
Please gather at the Wellington Street exit of Perth train station at 6:30pm. The march will start at 7pm sharp. The march will finish at Stirling Gardens where there will be a rally with speakers, performers and entertainers...
Reclaim the Night is an annual global event where women protest for their right to walk freely at night, free from the threat of rape and sexual violence.
Last year’s event in Perth was hosted by the ROAR Feminist Collective. Spokesperson Lianda Gibson described it as a huge success.
“Over two hundred women protested last year, and this year’s event is set to build on this success”
“This is an opportunity for women to share in an important global demonstration. This is especially important in the current climate where heated debates about consent and sexual assault are ongoing among government, sporting organisations and the media.”
It remains that at the local, everyday level many women fear walking in Northbridge, Scarborough and Fremantle, among other areas, because of fear of sexual harassment, assault and violence. It is more important than ever for women to join together without fear and reclaim the night”
Like many Reclaim the Night events across the globe, the Perth event will be for women and children only. This is to ensure that as many women as possible feel welcome, included and able to share their experiences. Men are encouraged to support this event by helping with publicity and respecting the event being for women and children.
Women will gather at 6.30pm on Friday 30 October at the Wellington Street exit of Perth Train Station. The march will proceed through the Murray and Hay St malls to Stirling Gardens for an evening of speeches, live music (they have lined up some fantastic Perth Musicians Hayley Beth, Goodnight Tiger, Li’l Leonie Lionheart, Seven Weapons, Clare Nina Norelli and Sian Brown) story sharing, stalls, performance art installations, and face painting. A children’s space and food will be available. This event is supported by Lotterywest.
If an Auslan interpreter is needed for the event please contact 0421 137 672 by the 10th of October so that this can be organised.
This event is wheelchair accessible.
