Gonski Response Should Be Released Without Delay

sstuwa-gonskiTeachers and principals today called for a clear timetable for action on the Gonski Review and for governments to work together to implement its recommendations.
Australian Education Union Federal President Angelo Gavrielatos said the Federal Government needed to release its response to Gonski as soon as possible.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity to get schools funding right,” Mr Gavrielatos said.

“The Gonski Review makes it clear too many children are being denied the resources and opportunities they need due to the broken funding system.

“We know there is growing, positive support for the Review’s recommendations from teachers, principals and parents along with Independent MPs and the Greens, unions, state and territory leaders, community and welfare groups and business representatives.

“The Federal Government now needs to lead the way on this issue and state and territory governments also need to play their part.

“It is time for action on this critical issue. Teachers and parents expect politicians from all parties to be able to work together to implement the changes that are required in education funding.

“Our children shouldn’t be denied the resources that will make such a difference to their education.

They should have first call on the budget, not be asked to wait in line.

“We need legislation introduced and passed through the parliament this year.

“As part of the I give a Gonski campaign, tomorrow has been declared national Gonski Day.

“Principals, teachers and parents will mark the day with activities in schools across the country.

“This is a day where we will call on all politicians to show their support for the Gonski Review recommendations and for a greater investment in the education of our children.”
