About the course
This course is designed as a next step for those who have previously participated in the SharpReading Stage 3: 'A Systematic Approach to Comprehension' workshop and have incorporated the SharpReading approach into their reading program. Join Hilton Ayery to reflect and review your current implementation and to learn some more.
Now that there is an understanding of the foundation for active reading covered in Stage 3, Stages 4-6 can be 'bolted on' to the routine to develop all the critical thinking that we hope for in our readers but struggle to consistently achieve. By creating a clear pathway for acquisition of more cognitively challenging skills, we ensure the reader continues to meet with success and is empowered by the reading process and not overwhelmed by all the possibilities.
"Great to get the advanced stages that build on Stage 3. To view comprehension as a developmental progression like this kmakes so much more sense than the haphazard, piecemeal way I have been teaching it." Teacher, Christchurch.
This Stage 4-6 SharpReading workshop includes:
- Stage 3 Review - bringing you our latest updates and checking that you are staying SHARP with your implementation.
- Stage 4: The Deep 4 (Constructing Meaning) - Adding 4 of the most important comprehension strategies to the reader's toolbox to help interpret and clarify the literal meaning of sentences - Visualisation, Prior Knowledge, Asking Questions, Forming Hypotheses.
- Stage 5: Analysing Text (Critical Thinking) - now is the time to introduce 'big picture' or whole text thinking. We explore the analysis of narrative and non fiction text while the students are reading (an essential active reading skill).
- Stage 6: (Critical thinking) - once meaning has been constructed and the content analysed the reader is in the position to be able to evaluate the quality of the text While they are reading (an essential active reading skill).
