The SSTUWA Early Childhood Educator Conference is an opportunity for early childhood educators within our union to come together to learn, collaborate and inspire.
Please join us to welcome award-winning teacher, passionate educator, instructional coach and author, Trevor MacKenzie from Canada.
Trevor believes that by increasing student agency over learning, weaving in strong pedagogy, transformative tech use, and sharing learning to a public audience, learners are ready to take on important roles in the 21st century.
Trevor will share stories from the classroom and stories of student ownership over learning. Be prepared for a heartfelt and passionate keynote experience that is certain to leave you full of wonder, vision and excitement.

From their youngest years, our children are innately curious. They explore the world around them through play, imagination, and discovery. They build meaning, they create understanding, and they unabashedly share their learning. It’s in this process that they find joy in life and relevance in the world around them.Trevor will discuss the importance of and power of recognising this curiosity, interest and passion at a young age and how we as teachers can harness it in our classrooms. He will frame three key themes of the play/discovery/inquiry classroom: creating learning experiences; providing agency in learning and fostering relationships.
An integral part of the Union’s Play is Learning campaign has been to explore the state of play in our schools. The SSTUWA invited early childhood educators to respond to a survey regarding learning and play in early childhood
K-2.
We welcome Dr Hesterman to this event to present the major findings of the survey and to share recommendations on The State of Play in WA
Participants will select from four workshop options. Each workshop will have 2 great ECE educators presenting how they incorporate play, discovery and inquiry learning into their classrooms.
This will provide an opportunity for same year-level educators to learn from each other. Time will be provided to share experiences around balanced learning and to build new connections in a relaxed round table sharing environment.
