Aspiring Union Delegate Training for Schools and TAFE

About the Course

This new one-day discovery experience is designed to support union members  who are planning to nominate for a union delegate position in 2025. Participants of this event will leave the training with more confidence to step into the new year with a deeper understanding of what the role can look like either in a TAFE College or a school. 

Whether you are a relatively new member, or have been an active member for sometime and just need a nudge, this course will support your decision making. You will be ready to move forward from the first branch meeting onwards.

A range of Union staff will work with aspiring delegates to explore and unpack what you need to know, including:

• What is a Union?
• Roles and Responsibilities of the Branch Leadership Team
• Union Support-  Your Organiser, Education and Training, Member Assist
• Electronic Support - The Website, The App 
  
• Your Agreement
• Organising 101

Nominated Audience

Members aspiring to move into a Union Delegate Position in 2025- Rep, Womens' Contact Officer or Deputy Rep in SCHOOLS and TAFE Colleges

Trade union training leave - Schools

Members in schools and TAFE colleges are eligible for five days of paid leave per year to attend trade union training (TUT).

To comply with TUT leave requirements applicants must:

• Submit applications to DoE/principal four weeks prior to the event.
• Provide DoE/principal with a printed copy of the course program.
• Be nominated by the SSTUWA. See “nominated audience” on the course program.

The school will not be charged for the salary of the person attending trade union training - this is covered by the DoE.  However, if a relief teacher is required, this is funded through the school's one line budget.

For school administration
When processing TUT leave applications:

• Ensure staff attending training have selected TUT Leave in HRMIS.
• Project code 1471 will be generated within the payment system.

Trade union training leave -TAFE

Members in TAFE colleges are eligible for five days of paid leave per year to attend trade union training (TUT).
To comply with TUT leave requirements applicants must:

• Submit applications to manager through your normal leave application process. You will be applying for Trade Union Training Leave of 7.5 hours per day.
• Provide manager with a printed copy of the course program.
• Be nominated by the SSTUWA. See “nominated audience” on the course program.
