The SSTUWA has a long and proud history of representing all teachers in Western Australian public schools including School Leaders since 1898.
We view School Leaders as critical to our collective function, well being and most importantly key to the continuation of quality public sector education.
The Union offers School Leaders an opportunity to be highly informed and contributing to the development and directions in the conditions of their employment through direct access to our Executive and union leadership.
The SSTUWA remains proactive in its support for the role of Field Officer in our organisation, specifically to ensure the representation of school leaders’ member perspectives, to identify and act upon matters impacting on them and to seek to address their needs in various negotiations.
The SSTUWA continues to provide a range of forums for members including:
- School Leaders Reference Group
- The School Leaders’ Committee
- AEU National Principals’ Committee.
The SSTUWA is continuing to refine and reflect on protocols and processes with the aim of continuous improvement to ensure that all members receive the best possible representation from the Union, including School Leaders.
A specific newsletter is prepared with 2 to 3 editions per term.

The Union continues its support for school leader members with a designated industrial officer’s position for members who hold leadership roles within schools such as principals, deputy principals and heads of departments. The role is critical to the equitable representation of school leaders as the Australian Principal Federation continues to pursue its legislative right to represent them at the State level. The work of the School Leaders’ Field Officer’ in 2011 is planned as follows;
- a. Organizing and serving of school leaders in schools and regions.
- b. Activating protocols within the organisation and liaison with senior officers and other industrial staff on matters pertinent to school leader members.
- School Leaders Reference Group
-
School Leaders Reference Group is open to all members who hold leadership positions within schools to include principals, deputies principals, associate principles, heads of departments.
This group meets twice per term. Facilities are provided to enable country members to join the meetings. The SLGR provides a forum for issues to be identified and discussed and advice forwarded to the Executive.
The Reference Group purpose is to represent the key concerns, share information, and form a consensus position and direct resolutions to the Executive. Most importantly the reference group provides collegial support.
In 2011 the School Leaders’ Reference Group (SLRG) has developed key focuses to increase collegial support via the use of our web site and on line forum. The forum aims to share information, develop networks and provide collegial advice.
- The School Leaders’ Council
-
The School Leaders’ Committee, (SLC). This group is a representative group of school leaders – gender, location and classification. It meets four times per year and provides policy advice to Executive from matters raised through the SLRG or as requested by Executive.
Professional development including an annual School Leaders’ Conference is facilitated through the Education Training Committee.
Access to supports through Member Assist Advise and Case Management practices, the advocates and the legal service as well as industrial staff is available. - AEU Principals' Committee

Through the AEU(WA) Branch the administrators’ are connected to a national principals’ committee. Two representatives attend this committee as well as the Industrial Officer. This forum provides an ability to contribute to influencing the national education agenda.
