VICTORIAN TAFEs could be forced to shut down or amalgamate after the Baillieu government slashed spending to 80 per cent of vocational courses as part of $100 million in cuts to skills funding.
TAFEs were reeling after the government announced drastic cuts to fee subsidies for courses including hospitality, fitness, business, events and retail.
The SSTUWA will host a special forum to address issues facing TAFE and skills on the 23rd of May. The Guest speaker will be Pat Forward, Federal TAFE Secretary (Australian Education Union). Pat is a leading expert on the training reform agendas of Federal and State Governments and implications for the Australian Community. Currently WA is experiencing an unprecedented boom in the resources sector bringing wealth to the WA Government and companies, yet WA is also experiencing skills shortages and extremely high youth unemployment.

TAFE Committee endorsed the proposed replacement General Agreement. This position was endorsed by Emergency Committee on Monday 19 March. Plans are on foot to progress a membership vote as soon as possible.
The final draft of the proposed replacement Agreement will be examined during the next week. TAFE Committee and Executive will have to formally endorse the document prior to voting. A voting period of four (4) weeks will be held with a ballot being sent out from the WAEC.
While the Australian Education Union welcomes the announcement by the Gillard Government that it will be taking a proposal to guarantee funding to students studying up to a certificate three at the next CoAG meeting in March, the Government must provide detail of the additional funds it will provide to support such an initiative. The AEU encourages states and territories to join the Federal Government in funding additional training for the many thousands of young Australians who could benefit from access to vocational education.
