Half Cohort Update 006: Reality Hits With Job Losses

annegisborne-oct-09Last week transfers hit the schools. It has now become clearer the impact at the moment on both permanent staff [moved out of their current school] and fixed term staff [positions that may have been available in 2010 have been filled with the transfer in of permanent staff who have lost teaching positions in their current schools].
The situation will be sensitive for staff without apparent job security for 2010 and those being forced to relocate. Please ensure that all individuals are supported.

Now, the Union needs your immediate assistance to assess the situation on the ground.

  • ACTION 1 – Union Reps to consult with the principal to ascertain the current staffing situation, complete the HALF COHORT “TRANSFERS” UPDATE and return it to the Union as a matter of priority.
  • ACTION 2 – Affected individuals [fixed term & permanent] are requested to complete the HALF COHORT “INDIVIDUAL STAFF MEMBER IMPACT” REPORT and return it to the Union as matter of priority [keep a copy].

LOBBYING POLITICIANS

  • ACTION 3 – Affected individuals are urged to make a meeting with their local MP as a matter of urgency to [a] apprise them of your person situation and [b] seek help.
  • ACTION 4 – Branches are asked to make a meeting with the local MP as a matter of urgency to [a] apprise them of the impact of the ‘half cohort’ on staffing; [b] relate some of the personal stories; and [c] identify concerns associated with the delivery of teaching and learning programs in your school.

P&C / SCHOOL COUNCIL

  • ACTION 5 – Report on the current situation to your P&C and School Council and seek their support in contacting the local MP.

The timeline is limited. Union Reps are advised to share responsibility for these various actions amongst other union members.

No WorkChoices WA

Troy Buswell and the State Government have appointed a former Howard Government industrial relations advocate to review Western Australian workplace laws and will soon announce changes that could affect up to 300,000 Western Australian workers' jobs and livelihoods.

For Our Future

Public schools are a foundation stone of our society. They are places of learning, of inspiration and opportunity where every Australian child can get the education they deserve.  It's the key to a strong economy, a skilled workforce and a socially cohesive society.

Save Our Schools

Public education should be free and open to all to ensure non-selective and non-discriminatory access to a high quality education. Every child has a right to be educated; to develop as a human being. This basic capability should not be denied to anyone, either by design, apathy or neglect.
