The Australian Education Union today welcomed the move by ACARA to shut down the Australia School Ranking website which named and shamed schools in league tables.AEU Federal President Angelo Gavrielatos said: “Naming and shaming schools for profit should never be allowed.
“But it is hypocritical for the Government to act against an online profiteer but not against the newspapers which produced league tables which were equally misleading but far more damaging.
“The AEU warned the Federal Government before My School went live that it needed to put in place protections to stop league tables being created.
“One way was to make it clear on the website that any unauthorised reproduction of the results was a breach of copyright.
“However the Government ignored that advice and failed in its responsibility to protect students from the damaging impact of league tables.
“Shutting down a website is one thing but what we need is a permanent solution to stop the further publication of damaging league tables.”
