Action Needed to Stop All League Tables

my-schoolThe Australian Education Union today welcomed the move by ACARA to shut down the Australia School Ranking website which named and shamed schools in league tables.

AEU Federal President Angelo Gavrielatos said: “Naming and shaming schools for profit should never be allowed.

“But it is hypocritical for the Government to act against an online profiteer but not against the newspapers which produced league tables which were equally misleading but far more damaging.

“The AEU warned the Federal Government before My School went live that it needed to put in place protections to stop league tables being created.

“One way was to make it clear on the website that any unauthorised reproduction of the results was a breach of copyright.

“However the Government ignored that advice and failed in its responsibility to protect students from the damaging impact of league tables.

“Shutting down a website is one thing but what we need is a permanent solution to stop the further publication of damaging league tables.”

No WorkChoices WA

Troy Buswell and the State Government have appointed a former Howard Government industrial relations advocate to review Western Australian workplace laws and will soon announce changes that could affect up to 300,000 Western Australian workers' jobs and livelihoods.

For Our Future

Public schools are a foundation stone of our society. They are places of learning, of inspiration and opportunity where every Australian child can get the education they deserve.  It's the key to a strong economy, a skilled workforce and a socially cohesive society.

Save Our Schools

Public education should be free and open to all to ensure non-selective and non-discriminatory access to a high quality education. Every child has a right to be educated; to develop as a human being. This basic capability should not be denied to anyone, either by design, apathy or neglect.
