Teach for Australia is a programme designed to place into schools unqualified people to teach. The programme provides these individuals with six week training prior to entry and then on-going training over two years whilst they are in schools and teaching students.
The programme is being promoted for introduction in W.A. The SSTUWA Executive discussed this matter at its March Executive. The following resolutions are being actioned:
That in response to move to try and establish the ‘Teach for Australia’ scheme in W.A., the SSTUWA:
(i) as a matter of urgency, raise with the Minister for Education Dr Liz Constable its strong objections to any moves to introduce the ‘Teach for Australia’ scheme into W.A.
(ii) as a matter of urgency, write to WACOT seeking assurances that it take action to ensure that such a scheme which undermines the very status of the profession is not able to be introduced into WA
(iii) immediately alert the membership to our concerns at the possible introduction of the ‘Teach for Australia’ scheme into WA
(iv) Invite members to engage in a letter/email campaign to the Federal and State Ministers of Education
(v) commence action around this issue including:
(a) Writing to the Prime Minister, the Federal and State Education Ministers and all state MPs and WA Federal MPs to raise concerns about the ‘Teach for Australia’ scheme and call for support to oppose such a scheme being introduced in WA
(b) Seek support for opposition to this scheme from WACSSO, principals’ associations, the IEU and other relevant bodies
(c) Explore through the AEU strategies being used in other states and territories to oppose this scheme
Members are urged to immediately write to the WACOT Board registering opposition to any adjustments to registration processes to enable this programme to be introduced.
