Join us for a light lunch anytime from 12 noon. Forum will commence at 12.45pm
The State School Teachers’ Union of WA (SSTUWA) continues to provide Early Childhood Educators with opportunities to develop effective industrial and professional practice, understandings and knowledge.
The SSTUWA invites school leaders and early childhood teachers to join the afternoon forum to hear from The Commissioner for Children and Young People - Jacqueline McGowan-Jones (TBC) and Dr Kaye Ayre - Edith Cowan University.
The Commissioner will provide an overview of her work over the next year and highlight any significant projects that may be of interest or may impact ECE teachers and classrooms. She will also provide information about her work with delivering critical supports and services to families after traumatic incidents.
We welcome Dr Kay Ayre - lecturer in Early Childhood Studies at Edith Cowan University, Western Australia. Dr Ayre has worked extensively with disengaged and disruptive children, their teachers and schools. Kay has a passion for helping build the capacity of teachers, to develop and maintain positive, inclusive classrooms with a focus on supporting children with trauma who demonstrate serious, disruptive behaviour.
Her research and her teaching, focus on challenging behaviour of children with and without trauma, trauma-informed positive behaviour support, functional behaviour assessment and childhood wellbeing and resilience.
Kay's session Trauma Informed Practice in Early Childhood will briefly provide some research data and statistics, an understanding of how trauma can impact learning and behaviour, and most importantly some practical strategies to take back to your classroom.
Take advantage of this forum as an opportunity to reflect on, and find better ways to support students who may be experiencing trauma.
