The SSTUWA is delighted to offer the annual Women’s Conference in 2023. This is an opportunity for women educators to share, connect, learn and be inspired by each other. You will work with strong women from our union (K-TAFE), from other workplaces and within the community who will share their stories about having a strong voice that resulted in dramatic change. The opening and closing keynote speakers will demonstrate how a strong voice can command attention, show confidence and inspire others to follow. Powerful workshop opportunities will help you refine your skills and abilities to stand up for yourself, find your voice and know that what you feel is worth sharing.
Mahboba Rawi fled Afghanistan when she was in her early teens and arrived in Australia as a refugee at 18 years old.
Mahboba's Promise, the charity she set up a decade later, was born of unimaginable tragedy. She lost her seven year old son in an accident and then committed herself to devote her life to saving children. The charity set up four orphanges in Afghanistan - each called Hope House.
When the Taliban took back power in Afghanistan in 2021 Mohboba and her second son Sourosh Cina were desperate to evacuate the children from the orphanges they founded. A year-long mission against all odds resulted in the rescue of 100 women and children into Australia.
Hear the story of how a mother and son led and coordinated this incredible rescue.
Sourosh and Mahboba were awarded 2022 Human Rights Medal for their work with women and children in Afghanistan and the help they provided to those fleeing the Taliban.
You will have the opportunity to select a breakout workshop to attend. Each workshop will focus on different aspects of being a strong woman. Take the time out to feel empowered in your actions or abilities, or just a reminder that you’re a strong, confident woman.
This session will mimic ‘speed dating’ experience. Four mini lectures will be on offer as you move from speaker to speaker for 12 mins at a time. A great opportunity to listen, learn and ask questions of four strong SSTUWA women around important campaigns and industrial topics.
The SSTUWA welcomes back AFL coach and mother, Michelle Cowan. Michelle has an incredible story to tell. With a tenacious attitude and determination like no other, she holds over 20 years experience in the AFL.
At 21, Michelle became the nation's first female WAFL Assistant Coach. Three years later, a strong voice allowed her to continue her career in a dual role at Melbourne Football Club with both the men's and women's teams. Michelle was the inaugural Fremantle Dockers AFLW Senior Coach form 2016 to 2018, before moving to West Coast Eagles and has recently been appointed head of the AFLW.
Her achievements have made the path much clearer for the next generation of women in football, proving gender is no longer a barrier to kicking goals. Michelle is a strong woman and a tribute to what all of us can achieve with enough guts, grit and determination.
