About the course

This five-day course is a statutory requirement for elected HSRs. It provides HS Representatives within the Education Department with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively perform their functions in protecting and promoting the work health and safety of those they represent. 

This newly developed course has been created based on the new WHS Act, 2020 and will provide updated information regarding this legislation. It will explore the expanded duties of parties and the changes to the functions and powers of HSR's.    

You are eligible to register in this new five-day course if you meet the following criteria:

• You are the officially elected HS Representative at your school. (Elected after March 2022)
• You have registered with the DoE OSH Team as the elected HS Representative for your school. Contact oshteam@education.wa.edu.au
• You have written permission from DoE Central OSH Team to attend the course in Perth, if you are from a regional area - contact oshteam@education.wa.edu.au.

Regionally Based Participants

If you are regionally based, it is important that you receive permission from the DoE to attend this event in Perth.  We ask you to do this ASAP.

For permission to attend you must contact DoE, Employee Relations, OSH Team on 9264 5480 or oshteam@education.wa.edu.au

As the DoE is funding your participation, travel and expenses, they will check if there might be an alternative location for you to attend.

Once you have received permission, please forward a copy of your written approval to the Education and Training Centre here at the SSTUWA.  Please send to training@sstuwa.org.au

Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

• Understand the WHS legislation relevant to their role.
• Apply the legislation to specific situations within educational settings.
• Apply DoE policy, procedures and agreements when carrying out the role of a representative.
• Carry out workplace inspections.
• Issue Provisional Improvement Notices (PINS) based on consultation, communication and cooperation.
• Investigate accidents and incidents.
• Follow procedures for resolving issues.
• Communicate and negotiate with appropriate parties.
• Identify hazards and appropriate control measures.

$ 0 : DoE covers costs

Leave is accessed through the short leave budget - Peoplesoft Codes apply - 1471 (teaching), 1472 (non teaching).  Leave does not come from the school budget.

All information regarding training course expenses recoup is available on the Department of Education IKON service.
